WWE NXT - July 31, 2014

by Samoa Rowe

-From Orlando, FL. Our hosts are Renee Young, Tom Phillips, and Byron Saxton.

Tyler Breeze vs. Angelo Dawkins

Dawkins scores an early takedown and gets cocky, allowing Breeze to aggressively toss him to the floor. Breeze attempts to establish a mean streak and quickly finishes with the Beauty Shot at 1:08. Breeze celebrates another successful squash with a selfie.
Winner: Tyler Breeze

-Not satisfied, Breeze tosses Dawkins out of the ring and grabs a mic. Breeze is annoyed that he had to wrestle because all he wanted to do was show footage of himself interfering in Adrian Neville’s match last week. Breeze teases announcing the date of his title shot, but fakes us all out, as he talks about his music video again. NXT Champion Adrian Neville interrupts and demands to know when their pending title match will happen. Breeze calls Neville a hobbit, even though he’s marginally taller. Neville retaliates with a “your mother” joke and clears the ring. I like this rivalry.

-Tyson Kidd interrupts Natalya’s interview and they argue over the merits of the Adam Rose character. I bet Triple H and Vince have this conversation often. Kidd wants Rose in the ring and he’s making his wife pass along the message.

-Ring announcer Brandi Rhodes announces that Tyler Breeze has left the building.

NXT Women’s Champion Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch

I wonder if Becky Lynch is related to Claire Lynch? They both spend time in Orlando. Anyhoo, Lynch more than holds her own against Charlotte in the early going. Becky nails a thrust kick to the head, but Charlotte nastily goes to work on the leg. Becky doesn’t really sell the leg in a comeback, but Charlotte cuts her off with her patented bulldog for the win at 3:58. Charlotte looks good even without Natalya there to carry her.
Winner: Charlotte

-Mojo Rawley is interviewed backstage and he seems to have forgotten that he lost a match in seconds last week. Bull Dempsey suggests they team up for the coming tag tournament, but warns him not to screw up.

NXT Tag Team Champions The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor) vs. Steve Cutler and Mac Miles

Whoa, the jobbers have names this week! Cutler, the former Marine, goes after Viktor but eats a shoulder block. Konnor tags and it’s basically all over for Cutler. I love Ascension squash matches where they don’t allow their opponents to make any tags. The Fall of Man ends it at 2:20. When someone finally beats The Ascension, it should be huge.
Winners: The Ascension

-The Ascension stick around for a post-match promo. Viktor addresses the #1 contenders tournament starting next week. Whoever wins it will be their next victims. Konnor promises “Total an-I-uh-lation.”

-CJ Parker gets his own video package. This dirty hippie cares about the environment, what a jerk. Also, he cheap shotted Xavier Woods with a roundhouse kick, so they’re feuding now.

Mojo Rawley and Bull Dempsey vs. The Mechanics (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder)

This is the Network debut of the Mechanics, who are passing themselves off as technicians who fix problems. Dawson was previously a Jamie Noble-esque hick, so this is an upgrade. The Mechanics manages to trap Rawley for a bit and already come across like a well-oiled machine. Rawley pops out for a tag to Dempsey, who finishes with the Bulldozer at 2:39. For a short match, this was pretty interesting. It sets Rawley and Dempsey up as wacky tag team partners who hate each other.
Winners: Mojo Rawley and Bull Dempsey

-Bayley is interviewed backstage about the recent happenings in the NXT women’s division. She was happy to see the BFF’s break up because they were mean to her. Bayley has dreams of becoming NXT Women’s Champion. Charlotte interrupts and verbally puts Bayley in her place. Poor Bayley.

Adam Rose (with the Rosebuds) vs. Tyson Kidd (with Natalya)

Kidd climbs through the ropes to break a wrist lock, prompting Rose to slap his behind. Rose takes a break to blatantly check out Natalya and offers her a lollipop, which she happily accepts. Kidd berates his wife for this insult and turns up the aggression but Rose shakes him off. Rose scores a baseball slide to send us to commercial. ON THIS WEEK’S TOTAL DIVAS, JUSTIN GABRIEL PICKS UP A GIRL AT A CLUB AND JOJO DOESN’T LIKE IT! That’s some must-see television. Anyways, back to the match, Tyson Kidd turns it around with the ol’ Irish whip into the ring post spot. Kidd nails a nifty leg drop over the ropes onto the apron and follows with the dreaded chinlock. Kidd is wrestling like an insecure, scared little man, but still dishes out a nice beating. Rose counters with a back suplex and makes a more-intense-than-usual-for-him comeback. Spinebuster by Rose gets a convincing near fall. Rose blocks a sharpshooter but gets catapulted neck-first into the ropes. Kidd delivers a soccer kick on the apron but Rose sneaks an inside cradle for the win at 9:49 (shown). Perfectly good TV main event here, **½.
Winner: Adam Rose

-Kidd shuns Natalya after the match, apparently blaming her for the loss.

Final Thoughts: Tyson Kidd sure is jobbing a lot, but he’s looking good doing it. Breezy show this week that provided lots of set-up for appealing feuds and angles. Easy thumbs up.
